I received a call around 7.30 one morning alerting concerning a high profile claim; a client’s truck-trailer had been hit by a small aeroplane. Fortunately no one was hurt, but significant damage was caused to the vehicle and cargo.
The driver of the truck-trailer was minding his own business making good time on his regular mid-country run. Whilst passing the Feilding Aerodrome the driver sensed a large object in his peripheral vision and instinctively ducked as he felt a massive jolt and heard the sound of smashing metal.
The smashing metal was a two seater Cessna ripping apart. The pilot had been approaching the airport to land and had flown too low, too early, and had clipped a digger mounted on the truck’s trailer. The plane smashed into several pieces spreading from a nearby creek to the runway. The lucky pilot and her passenger only sustained moderate injuries.
The call came in from a rather stunned loss adjustor and caused quite a stir in the office. It was a reminder to all of us to expect the unexpected.By Richard Hoblyn
A Fiery Night
One of our customers purchased her lifetime dream, a brand new motorhome. The investment was a massive $125K so she made it a priority to immediately arrange full heavy motor vehicle insurance. The brand new vehicle contained a sleeping quarters, a dining space, a bathroom and a fully functional kitchen.
Not long after picking up the vehicle our customer noticed that the fridge was faulty. She contacted the dealer who acted immediately and arranged for a replacement
to be installed.
During her first night on the road she awoke to the terrifying reality that the campervan was in flames. Horrifically her hair caught fire but she managed to escape with her life. The campervan however, was completely destroyed.
Our customer was completely traumatised by the experience and we knew it was important to settle the claim as quickly and easily as possible. It was determined that the fire was caused by a fault in the newly installed fridge. This raised the issue of liability and the dealer was deemed responsible.
The claims team pushed to resolve the case quickly and the claim was processed within a week. Our objective is to minimise anguish and disruption for our clients and streamline the process as much as possible.By Bryce Paice
